Private Gardens

Our clients wanted to make the most of their very small Central London courtyard / rear garden that is dominated by a large mature magnolia that they wanted to keep. The garden had to provide for entertaining as well as relaxing for a young family and their friends. The brief was to create a feeling of space with a lighter airier feel and establish as much usable space as possible. We prepared a detailed design with a 3D computer model that enabled the production of a very simple movie to enable the client to see the garden from all angles and fully understand our proposals. They were delighted and work started immediately on transforming the space.

The new garden has a smart contemporary feel with low rendered retaining walls at seating height and newly laid sawn stone paving with an invisible slot drain running the width of the garden. Only the highest quality materials have been used throughout.

The planting provides year round interest. Dense evergreens are used to provide contrast to vibrant flowering borders, seasonal bedding and herbaceous planting provide additional lush foliage, texture and flower. Raised shrub beds with smart integral seating enable users to get close to the planting.

The boundary walls were enhanced and softened by the installation of bespoke trellis panels above rendered boards that were mounted on the trellis supports to hide the old brickwork that had various finishes and differing heights. An integral part of the trellis and the main feature of the garden are the printed Perspex screens with a complete woodland scene at 1:1 that gives a feeling of depth and space beyond the confines of the garden. By setting the screens slightly off the back wall natural light is able to penetrate and enhance the effect.

The garden won a principle BALI award for the best garden under £30K.
