Private Gardens

Our clients were very lucky to have a small garden in Kensington Court, located in the heart of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but they found that their space was very underused due to the complicated level changes, and the fact that it was overlooked by pedestrians that walked along the pavements that bordered two sides of the property. They had no privacy at all so rarely used their garden.

The brief was simple, the family wanted a garden room that they would want to use and that they felt comfortable in. The space was totally redesigned to improve access from the lower ground floor apartment and to have sufficient room for outdoor dining and seating.

Our team of garden designers and Landscape architects introduced much wider and more inviting stairs that ensured that the whole garden was usable by the whole family throughout the year. They prepared an accurate 3D model of the proposed garden, supported by mood boards illustrating similar schemes so that the client could fully understand how the garden would work and what the space would look like.

The existing high retaining walls that were too close to the building and reduced the amount of light in the adjacent rooms were cut back in a series of planted terraces. The walls were constructed in rendered blockwork in a white finish so that they were low level and capped with a light sawn stone to ensure that they allowed light into the apartment. Enclosure to the whole garden was provided by the careful positioning of a combination of contemporary iroko screens, Yew hedging and specimen topiaries contrasting with more naturalistic planting chosen for its colour scent and all year round interest. Existing trees and sparse hedgerows were supplemented by additional evergreen specimens.

The largest terrace which is intended to be used as the main dining area is surfaced in beautiful hardwood decking bordered by sawn natural sandstone. One side of the deck has a contrasting rustic bench that was built into the low retaining walls to increase the amount of seating available. The highest terrace level was surfaced with a faux grass lawn that the children could play on and discrete lighting was introduced to the steps, planting and retaining walls to encourage the use of the garden into the evening and all year round.
