Our clients were in the process of totally refurbishing their Georgian property with the Architect Valeria Manzini proposing an open-plan kitchen/diner and living area on the lower ground floor with higher ceilings than the original rooms. As a result, it was necessary to reduce the internal floor levels. The existing garden had been neglected for a long period of time.

They approached us to produce a simple and elegant design that would bring new life to the property. The brief was to create a feeling of space and to ensure that the whole garden was usable by the whole family throughout the year. It was very important to the client that the garden looked good from the house and views from all rooms were considered carefully. Only the highest quality materials would be used throughout.

An extensive Plant Room and Laundry extended under the whole front garden which meant that this area would mainly be roof garden. The brief for the front garden was to create a space that was inviting and reflected the grandeur of the architecture.

The existing garden was a very neglected space with stark boundary walls. Our Team of Landscape architects and garden designers proposed that a large terrace area was created close to the house that the area would be at the same level as the interior lower ground floor. The area of the patio was reduced by three steps and low-level planting beds created adjacent to the house and terrace to provide the enclosure and bring greenery closer to the house.

The garden had to provide for entertainment as well as relaxation. The client wanted sufficient patio space to be able to entertain comfortably and a bespoke outdoor kitchen would encourage use all year round. A wall of folding glass doors opens out from the kitchen/dining room ensuring the garden became part of the interior space. Access was required to a storeroom at the end of the garden. The existing boundary treatments were enhanced by the installation of bespoke trellis panels that also disguise the store.

Specimen trees and shrub planting provide enclosure and all year round interest. Dense evergreens are used to provide contrast to vibrant flowering borders; seasonal bedding and herbaceous planting provide additional lush foliage, texture and flower. Seating height planting beds on the lower terrace add more lush foliage to be viewed from the basement. Important features of the new garden are the specimen Olive trees that were carefully transplanted from the client’s previous garden.

A controllable lighting system was installed to enhance the overall effect and create varying lighting moods throughout the garden.
